Legend has it that traditional healer Velandi Vaidyar had a big catch after several hours of fishing in a major tank located on the outskirts of present Palakkad town about three centuries ago. With the help of certain local people, the Vaidyar cleaned the fish and the pieces were sent home after wrapping them in the leaf of a tree nearby. The pieces were seen united on reaching home and no cuts were visible. There begins the story of famous Muttikulangara Brand Oil, a herbal oil mix that can heal cuts and wounds. Mixing the leaf with coconut oil, the Vaidyar developed a concoction for treating all kinds of cuts, wounds, sprains and fractures.
